Securing Critical Mineral Supply Chains While Promoting Sustainable Industrial Development

Specialized 2
Committee Summary
Background guideLithium. Cobalt. Nickel. These resources, among many others, have become essential to the modern global economy. They power everything from electric vehicles and renewable energy technologies to electronics and advanced manufacturing. Yet the supply chains behind them are far from evenly distributed, with mineral extraction concentrated in a small number of countries and China maintaining a dominant role in the processing of many critical minerals. As global demand continues to rise, governments are increasingly treating access to these resources as an issue of economic security and geopolitical influence. At the same time, many resource-rich developing countries, particularly in Africa, lack the infrastructure and financing necessary to process their own minerals and build domestic industries, while high levels of sovereign debt can further limit their ability to invest in long-term development. Foreign investment and development financing can help bridge this gap, but they can also create financial dependence and increase competition among major economic powers. Policies including export restrictions, domestic processing requirements, friendshoring, and initiatives such as China’s Belt and Road Initiative have further complicated the relationship between mineral security and economic development. The G20 must therefore consider how critical mineral supply chains can become more secure and resilient while ensuring that resource-producing countries are able to benefit from their own natural resources. Delegates will confront questions surrounding supply chain diversification, sovereign debt, development financing, environmental and labor standards, and the role of international financial institutions all the while balancing sovereignty and sustainable industrial development.
Committee Staff

Head Chair
Anoushka Rajeshkumar
Hi everyone! My name is Anoushka Rajeshkumar, and I am a senior at Vista. I am excited to serve as the Head Chair of Specialized Committee II for this year's VMUNC. This is my fourth year of Model UN, and I have also been involved in speech and debate for seven years. I have attended VMUNC, DMUNC, and BMUNC, where I have received awards while meeting many incredible delegates. Outside of MUN, I enjoy reading, playing the piano, and listening to music. My biggest advice is to put yourself out there and participate, even if you are nervous. Some of the best committee experiences come from sharing your ideas, working with others, and having fun. I cannot wait to meet you all at VMUNC VIII!

I have participated in Model UN for four years and attended collegiate conferences at Davis and Berkeley. I enjoy playing guitar and bass and spending time with friends. My favorite artists are Coldplay and Tecca. My advice to delegates is to have fun and socialize respectfully while in conference. It is not always about awards and debate; some of the best experiences in Model UN come from meeting new people. Ask any questions you have, and I hope to see you at VMUNC!

Vice Chair
Shikha Kale
Hi everyone! My name is Shikha Kale, and I am a senior at Vista. I am excited to serve as one of your Vice Chairs for Specialized Committee II at VMUNC VIII. This is my fourth year participating in Model UN, and I have attended VMUNC and BMUNC, where I learned a lot about debate, diplomacy, and collaboration. Outside of MUN, I enjoy hanging out with friends, traveling, working out, and listening to music. Some of my favorite artists are Steve Lacy and Childish Gambino. My biggest advice is to build on other delegates' ideas instead of worrying about saying the perfect thing. The best debates happen when people listen, ask thoughtful questions, and work together to move committee forward. Have fun, challenge yourself, and make the most of every committee session. See you at VMUNC VIII!
