United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA): Ensuring the Peaceful, Sustainable, and Equitable Use of Outer Space

General Assembly 1: UNOOSA
Committee Summary
The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) works to promote international cooperation in the peaceful exploration and use of outer space, helping countries share the benefits of space science, technology, and exploration. With more than 6,000 active satellites currently orbiting Earth and private companies rapidly expanding into space exploration, the international community faces new challenges that could shape humanity’s future beyond Earth. With today’s rapidly growing space industry, this committee will explore how nations can cooperate in developing and enforcing rules for the use of space resources while ensuring that increasing activity in space remains peaceful and sustainable. From determining how resources such as lunar water and minerals should be governed to addressing the growing threat of space debris and accessibility gaps, delegates will confront challenges that could affect future exploration. Ultimately, delegates will consider how countries can balance national interests with international cooperation while strengthening responsible frameworks that allow humanity to explore space without repeating the conflicts and inequalities found on Earth. The future of space exploration is still unwritten, but you as delegates can help decide what comes next.

Head Chair
Nandini Vadarevu
Hi everybody! My name is Nandini Vadarevu and I am a senior at Vista del Lago High School. I have been a part of Model UN for four years now; some of my experience includes VMUNC V, DMUN, and BMUN. Through different conferences I have learned so much and I have made some really good friends along the way. Outside of Model UN, I love going out with friends, trying new restaurants, going on drives, and hiking. For this and future conferences, my best advice would be to trust yourself. No matter how confident or nervous you may be, have trust in your knowledge and hopefully extensive research. Also, don’t be afraid to ditch prepared speeches! I would rather see speeches with a few hiccups and mistakes rather than every delegate simply sharing thoughts that aren’t theirs from a piece of paper. With that being said, keep speeches on topic. I know the idea of speaking as many times as possible is very appealing; however, try to limit yourself to only doing speeches that contribute to productive debate. Remember delegates, you have all the tools you need to be successful! If you have any questions at all please feel free to reach out, I’d be happy to help! I am looking forward to seeing you all!!

Vice Chair
Rohan Gopinath
Hey team. My name’s Rohan Gopinath, and I am an incoming senior at VDLHS. I’ve participated in MUN all 4 years of high school, and I’m thrilled to be your Vice Chair for GA1 in VMUNC VII. I have been to 3 VMUNCs, 2 BMUNs, and DMUN. When I’m not working on MUN, I enjoy coaching kids in impromptu speaking, playing volleyball, and drawing. The best advice I can give to delegates, new or returning, is that the more information you have, the more confident you’ll be. It’s ok to be underprepared, but having a ton of knowledge up your sleeve will guarantee you a spot as one of the most productive people in your committee. Regardless of your preparation, it's important to not be scared and remember that people are just as unsure about themselves as you may be. Feel free to ask any questions to me or your other chairs, and remember that no question is embarrassing. Have fun, and welcome to VMUNC VIII.

Vice Chair
Anaya Bhattacharyya
Hi! I’m Anaya Bhattacharyya and a junior at VDLHS. I’m really excited to be your Vice Chair for GA 1 this VMUNC. I’ve been doing MUN for four years, and since then I’ve attended several high school and collegiate conferences alike, such as BMUNC, DMUNC, and GauchoMUN. In the past, I’ve also had the opportunity to coach middle school delegates at FMS for a year and to chair at a mock conference. Outside of MUN, I enjoy reading, playing piano/double bass, and journaling. My advice to new delegates is to not get caught up in having a “perfect performance” and to just go with the flow. Give yourself the freedom to make mistakes or take risks in committee because at the end of the day, you are your own worst critic. This is a very beginner-friendly, low pressure environment, so take this as an opportunity to figure out your strengths and weaknesses as a delegate and account for them at future conferences. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Vice Chair
Dev Pushkal Mishra
Hi, delegates! I’m Dev Mishra, a sophomore at Vista del Lago, and I am looking forward to being your Vice Chair for GA 1 this year at VMUNC VIII. I have competed in various conferences, including VMUNC VII and ARCMUNC III, and aim to compete in many others in the years to come. Apart from Model UN, I enjoy travelling, singing, going on runs and biking, reading, and spending time with friends. For anyone attending VMUNC this year, I would advise you to make the most out of your time here. This conference is the place to take risks, put forth your thoughts and ideas, problem-solve, and learn through the process. You may not completely understand what's happening in a committee at first, but you will leave this conference an experienced delegate, ready to tackle future conferences. Use every opportunity to speak, and, since the flow of debate may veer away from your original plan, you can count on the necessity for impromptu thinking and negotiation. As always with VMUNC, we are here to help you, and you are free and encouraged to ask questions during committee. I hope you have a blast, and see you at the conference!
